Year-End Message from

As 2024 draws to a close, we look back on a year marked by struggle, resilience, and growth for The Irrawaddy. Our pages have been filled with important stories—from conflict and the victories of the armed resistance to cross-border crime, online scams, and the vital topics of women, peace, and security. Later in the year, we turned our focus to the devastating impact of floods and climate change, documenting these issues with dedication and urgency.

Beyond Myanmar's borders, our desk has provided extensive coverage of China-Myanmar and Thailand-Myanmar affairs. Our in-depth analysis has resonated with our readers: we excel in this area, bridging perspectives and delivering insights into these complex relationships.

Myanmar remains volatile, with little hope for peaceful political change. In the face of adversity, the exiled media community must grow stronger, finding ways to sustain operations despite the confrontations and uncertainties ahead. We remain hopeful that our donors' effective support for exiled media will endure. Without independent media, democracy cannot survive, and we are determined to persevere.

Yet amidst these challenges, we have stayed committed to bringing you accurate news, credible information, thoughtful analysis, and striking images. Our YouTube channel reached a new milestone this year, surpassing 1 million subscribers and rising. Our loyal and expanding audience—both inside and outside Myanmar—is a testament to the trust placed in our brand and the quality of our content.

Happy New Year!
